The Barns at Withygate
I’m thrilled to announce that I’ve been booked to photograph a wedding at The Barns at Withygate — a beautiful new wedding venue opening in North Devon. As a North Devon wedding photographer, shooting at fresh, thoughtfully designed venues is always exciting, and The Barns at Withygate promises to be a wonderful setting for storytelling photography.
Why The Barns at Withygate excites me
Fresh, authentic character: The Barns at Withygate blends rustic charm with contemporary comforts. Exposed beams, natural light and textured stone create a warm atmosphere that translates beautifully in both candid and posed shots.
Versatile indoor and outdoor spaces: The venue’s ceremony barn, reception areas and landscaped grounds offer varied backdrops. I’m looking forward to using these different locations to capture a full day of moments — from getting ready and first looks to relaxed evening portraits and lively dancefloor shots.
Natural light opportunities: Large windows and open barn doors let in generous natural light, which I favour for natural, luminous wedding photographs. Natural light enhances skin tones and emotional moments, producing images that feel timeless and honest.
Intimate North Devon setting: Situated in the North Devon countryside, The Barns at Withygate benefits from coastal and rural surroundings. I plan to use the local landscape for romantic couple portraits and sweeping group shots that reflect the location’s unique character.
How I approach photographing a new venue
Pre-visit and planning: I always try to visit a venue beforehand where possible. This helps me plan the best times for portraits and scout locations for key moments like the ceremony, confetti and evening portraits.
Creating a timeline with you: Working with the couple and the venue team ensures the photography timeline supports the flow of the day while allowing time for beautiful, relaxed images.
Blending documentary and editorial styles: I aim to capture genuine, unposed moments while also crafting refined portraits and group shots that will stand the test of time.
Adapting to light and mood: Barn venues can change dramatically through the day. I’ll adapt camera settings and composition to match the atmosphere — airy and soft during daylight, intimate and warm as evening falls.
