The Leaping Trout

Ricky and Annie’s wedding at The Leaping Trout in Tiverton last August was a celebration defined by personal touches, relaxed moments and joyful spontaneity. They transformed the venue themselves, turning the space into a warm, intimate setting that clearly reflected their personalities and the care they put into every detail.

The ceremony took place outdoors, overlooking the river. The setting was simple and beautiful: a soft breeze, late-summer light and the quiet flow of water as a natural backdrop. Guests gathered on the lawn, and the atmosphere felt informal yet heartfelt — exactly what the couple wanted.

Rather than traditional posed portraits, Ricky and Annie asked for a documentary approach. I worked unobtrusively throughout the day, capturing candid interactions, genuine expressions and the small, meaningful gestures that make a wedding unique. Without staged shots, the photographs show the wedding as it really happened: laughter between friends, quiet glances during the ceremony, children exploring the riverbank and the relaxed energy of an evening among close family.

Part of the evening’s magic came from a surprise mariachi band that Ricky and Annie had organised for their guests. When the band began, everyone was up and dancing — the music brought spontaneous celebration to the fore. These were some of the most energetic and fun images of the day helped by lots of Tequila.

Catering was provided by Salt Catering, whose food complemented the laid-back, personal vibe of the day. Plates were enjoyed outdoors, and the relaxed reception layout encouraged mingling and conversation rather than a strictly formal sequence of events.

Decorated entirely by the couple, the venue showcased their taste and effort: thoughtful centrepieces, handmade signage and personal touches that gave the space character without feeling overworked. Those details, combined with the natural riverside backdrop, created a setting that felt both polished and personal.

Photographing Ricky and Annie’s wedding was a pleasure because of their clear vision and trust in letting the day unfold naturally. The result is a collection of images that read like a story — unposed, lively and true to the experience of the day.
